Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about doula support

What is a doula?

A doula is a professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a birthing person before, during, and shortly after childbirth. Unlike medical providers, doulas don't perform clinical tasks, deliver babies, or give medical advice. Our role is to support you and your partner, help you navigate your options, and enhance your birth experience.

How is a doula different from a midwife?

Midwives are medical professionals who provide clinical care, monitor the health of the birthing person and baby, and deliver babies. Doulas provide non-clinical support focused on comfort, advocacy, and continuous presence. Many people have both a midwife for clinical care and a doula for additional support.

Will a doula replace my partner's role?

Absolutely not! A doula supports both you and your partner. For many partners, having a doula present helps them participate at their comfort level, with guidance when needed. We'll help your partner be as involved as they want to be, showing them comfort measures and giving them breaks when needed.

Do you only support natural births?

We support all types of births! Whether you're planning an unmedicated birth, want an epidural, or need a cesarean birth, our support remains the same. Our role is to support YOUR preferences, not promote any particular type of birth. We believe the best birth is one where you feel supported and respected in your choices.

When should I hire a doula?

Most people hire a doula in the second trimester (around 20-30 weeks), but we've supported clients who contacted us earlier or later in pregnancy. It's never too early or too late to inquire about support!

What is your backup doula policy?

We work with a network of professional backup doulas who share our philosophy of birth support. You'll have the opportunity to meet our primary backup doula during your prenatal period. In the rare event that your primary doula cannot attend your birth due to illness or another emergency, our backup will provide the same level of care following your birth preferences.
